Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations of all time, as it is a great place for both enjoying the beach in hot sun and getting involved in many different activities. Besides that, due to the large size of the mainland, Spain’s landscape changes quite a bit in different sides of the country, which means that visiting again can be like visiting a whole new country.
The best part about Spain, however, is that you can plan a whole family holiday there without breaking the bank. And if you are still not sure whether it is the right place to take your family to, here are some main reasons why Spain is a great family holiday destination:
Why you should choose Spain for your next family holiday

Spanish culture
Spain has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. It certainly isn’t the drinking or smoking that’s behind the data – a lot of it has to do with how well connected they are. Spaniards are extremely family-oriented, great with children and are very social.
This means that you do not have to worry about places with “no children” policies, as they are not uptight on children misbehaving in restaurants. They tend to be more laid back and take their time to have meals. Dinner meals can last hours and can often involve singing, dancing and generally having lots of fun. Children are made welcome, get involved more and tend to enjoy themselves too.

Spanish accommodation
Among the best places for a family holiday in Spain is Barcelona. Barcelona has a wide variety of activities, such as theatre, a tour of the Camp Nou and waterparks. In addition to that, there are many options for family holiday rentals in Barcelona. For instance, companies such as Lugaris Rambla offer family accommodation in easily accessible locations and some are even located within walking distance to the beach. The metro and coastal train also makes it easy to have days out.
Spanish weather
Going on a family holiday, you do not want to be worried about the weather suddenly changing and ruining some of your plans. Spain does not disappoint in this case either, as it remains one of the nicest year-round climates in Europe. The gorgeous sunshine in the summer and warm spring-like weather in winter makes it easy to enjoy the holidays at any time of the year, especially with youngsters on board.

Spanish Environment
Although Spain does attract a lot of pickpockets in the busy and most touristy locations, in general, Spain is considered a safe country to travel to. Spain has a very low risk of any natural disasters as well as statistically does not have many mugging or violent incidents. Spain also does not have many dangerous insects or animals wandering about, unless you would look for them in forests or deep seas.
Activities in Spain
Spain is extremely family-friendly when it comes to the vast variety of activities that are suitable to enjoy for children and adults. Here are some of the main family activities you can enjoy while on a Spanish holiday:
- Water parks
Spanish people definitely love their water parks, as there is an impressive number of them in Spain to choose from. The best ones there are considered the Siam Park in Adeje, the Aqualandia in Benidorm and the Water world in Lloret. However, if these are too far from the city you are staying in, there will surely always be another option that is close to you.
Water parks in Spain have a wide range of water rides for different age groups and different appetites for adrenaline. This means that not only the kids get to enjoy themselves, but adults can have a great time as well.
- Theme parks
If you are not that keen on water rides, there is always an option of theme parks in Spain. Theme parks also tend to be great for the whole family, as usually they have some fun activities for children with characters from their favourite shows. Besides that, adults can enjoy the super-fast rides in extreme heights.
Some of the most popular theme parks in Spain include Portaventura World in Tarragona, Park Warner in Madrid, Tibidabo Amusement Park in Barcelona and Tivoli World in Benalmadena.

- Chocolate museum
As children tend to have a sweet tooth, Museu de la Xocolata in Barcelona could be a great place to visit for the whole family. There you will find out about the cultural and economical connection in history between Spain and chocolate, how it all started and how it used to be made.
You will get to appreciate some chocolate fountains and sculptures that will get your stomach growling. In the museum you also get an opportunity to become a chocolatier yourself, by making some sweets and tasting them.
- Zoos and aquariums
Spain has a number of zoos and aquariums that are great for the whole family. As they have some colourful and exotic animals due to the climate, there is definitely something new to see and learn in the zoos. It is common that you can enjoy some dolphin or bird shows in these places. Some of the main ones to visit are Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, Oceanografic in Valencia and Tierra Rapaz in Calahorra.
