Popular Activities at Watergate Bay Beach

Several factors contribute to Watergate Bay’s enduring popularity:

Surfing and Watersports: Watergate Bay Beach is famous for its surf, attracting surfers from around the world. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner looking to catch your first wave, the surf schools at Watergate Bay offer lessons and equipment hire. Besides surfing, you can also try kitesurfing and bodyboarding. When it’s super windy we love to watch the kitesurfers and windsurfers in the bay! On the rare calm days, you can enjoy paddleboarding here!

Beach Walks and Rockpooling: The expansive beach is perfect for long walks, especially during low tide when you can explore the rock pools teeming with marine life. It’s a great activity for families and nature lovers.  To the left of Watergate is Fruitful Cove nestled amongst Zacry’s Islands and Whipsiderry Beach which are accessible at low tide.  Just be mindful of the tide times as the tide cuts off Whipsiderry at mid to high tide, you don’t want to get stuck!

Dining with a View: After a day of activities, enjoy a meal at one of the beachside restaurants. Watergate Bay Hotel offers three restaurants (Zacry’s, The Beach Hut and The Living Space) that offer delicious local cuisine, including vegan-friendly options in Newquay, with stunning sea views.

You’ll find Wax Watergate not far from the beach, a casual pub where you can dine in or order takeaway food to take down to the beach.  In the closest car park to the beach, you’ll discover The Beach Bar and on the slope down to the beach you’ll see Cub’s Coffee, both offer takeaway food from pizza to coffee and cake.

Whether you’re looking for a casual bite or a fine dining experience, you’ll find something to satisfy your palate.

Yoga and Wellness: For those seeking relaxation, Watergate Bay is an excellent spot for beach yoga sessions. The sound of the waves and the serene environment create the perfect backdrop for mindfulness and wellness activities.  The hotel offers a special swim and dine offer where non-residents too can make use of their sea-view infinity pool and sauna.

Bodyboarding at Watergate Bay
We love bodyboarding at Watergate Bay. It almost always has the perfect conditions to catch loads of fast waves!

Family Fun: The vast expanse of golden sand at Watergate Bay is ideal for families with children. The shallow waters near the shore provide a safe paddling area which is lifeguarded in the summer season, while rock pools teeming with marine life offer endless exploration opportunities. We one saw a “dustbin lid” jellyfish on this beach – crazy! Additionally, the wide-open beach allows for building sandcastles, playing frisbee, or simply soaking up the sun.

Dog-Friendly Beach: Watergate Bay Beach is dog-friendly all year round. Bring your furry friend along for a run on the sand or a splash in the sea. There are often dog meetups here too – once we visited for a walk and there must have been 100 sausage dogs and their owners! Not so great for my daughter who has cynophobia!

Toilets and Showers: Public toilets and showers are available, making it convenient for families and those spending the entire day at the beach.  Sometimes the toilets are free and sometimes they are paid for!  We’ve never had to pay for the public toilets here in the three years we’ve lived here so far. Hopefully, they will stay free. I last used the female toilets in June 2024 and the payment machines aren’t currently there, but here’s what Visit Newquay say, so whether they will add the payment machines back or not, I don’t know:

We love to go to Watergate Bay in all seasons. In the winter months, it’s so quiet, we often get the beach to ourselves and the children have plenty of space to run around with a ball.
