Why Visit Great Western Beach?

One of the main attractions of Great Western Beach is its versatility. The beach is well-suited for families, surfers, and those looking to relax in a scenic setting (at least when looking out to sea or at the natural cliffs as the black-painted gym backing Great Western leaves a lot to be desired and I hope they make it more attractive one day!)

The natural shelter provided by the cliffs creating a cove at mid tide and low tide, makes it a safe haven from the wind, creating ideal conditions for sunbathing and picnics.

Surfing is a popular activity here, with waves that cater to both beginners and intermediate surfers. Beginners can take gentle rolling waves on the golden sands, while experienced surfers can tackle the more challenging breaks further out.

The beach’s proximity to Newquay town centre means it’s easily accessible, with ample amenities nearby, yet it retains a sense of seclusion and peace as nearby beaches Towan, Tolcarne and Fistral tend to draw the larger crowds.

Or on calmer sea days give kayaking or paddleboarding a go (available for hire too).  Of course, you can also swim, paddle and bodysurf too!

Being a sheltered cove, it’s a great spot for a beach picnic – just make sure you bin your rubbish and leave no trace.  Also, be careful of cliff rock falls and sit at a safe distance.

The beach’s location also makes it a perfect starting point for Newquay coastal walks, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean in Newquay Bay.

To the left of the beach, you can walk to Towan Beach, Newquay Harbour, Towan Headland, Fistral Beach and Pentire Headland

To the right, you’ll discover the beaches of Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze, Porth, Whipsiderry and Watergate Bay.

At low tide, you can walk along the sand to many of these beaches, or if the tide is too high, you can access the roads above to continue your coastal walk.

Just be mindful of tide times so you are not cut off by the sea if you are taking the sand… unless you don’t mind a swim!
