Nestled in the heart of Newquay, Cornwall is the popular Tolcarne Beach with its stunning crescent of golden sand, bordered by dramatic cliffs and an endless view of the beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
This picturesque spot is ideal for relaxation, dining and adventure, making it a beloved destination for tourists and locals alike.
Read on as I explore Tolcarne Beach through pictures and words.

Why Tolcarne Beach is a Must-Visit
This beautiful crescent bay boasts soft, golden sand, inviting turquoise waters, and a relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart from the bustling energy of Newquay’s Fistral Beach or Towan Beach.
Tolcarne Beach is renowned for its beautiful scenery and its excellent surfing conditions. As part of the famous surfing coastline of Newquay, it attracts surfers from all levels.

The beach is also perfect for families, with its soft sand and gentle waves creating a safe environment for children to play and swim with lifeguard cover throughout the summer months. The beach shelves gradually, allowing little ones to build sandcastles, paddle in the shallows, and enjoy a carefree day at the seaside.

What to Do at Tolcarne Beach
Surfing: With consistent waves, the beach is ideal for surf enthusiasts. While not as world-renowned as Fistral, Tolcarne Beach offers excellent surfing conditions for beginners and intermediate surfers. Surf lessons and equipment hire are readily available, making it easy for beginners to get started.

Bodyboarding: Bodyboarding is another fun activity to do in the waves at Tolcarne. The “Tolcarne Wedge” is a popular spot for bodyboarders, thanks to the unique wave formation created by the breakwater.

Beach Activities: Besides surfing, visitors can enjoy sunbathing, building sandcastles, admiring the views, walking along the shoreline, paddling, picnicking, rock pooling at low tide, and admiring a sunset with an ocean view.

Dining and Relaxation: The beachfront features the popular Colonial Restaurant & Wedge Cafe, serving locally sourced food with a stunning view of the Atlantic. The terrace here is perfect for watching the sunset with a meal or a drink.

Events: From sandcastle competitions to beach BBQs, firepit evenings to live music, and even Christmas market stalls in their beach huts, Tolcarne offers a variety of events throughout the year.

How to access Tolcarne Beach?
The beach is accessible via a steep road or steps leading down from the cliff top, providing breathtaking views as you descend. Parking in the small car park along the slope is for guests staying in the accommodation only. There are car parks nearby and a few nearby streets with free parking if you don’t mind a short walk to the beach.

How many steps down to Tolcarne Beach?
Brace yourself for a staircase adventure! There are 138 steps that wind down the cliffside to reveal Tolcarne Village and Tolcarne Beach. Some websites claim there are 200, but I’ve been there today and counted them!
There are then a further four steps from Tolcarne Village to access the sand.
If you’re feeling less vertical, a twisty sloped road also leads down to Tolcarne from the lefthand side of Barrowfields.
Can you swim on Tolcarne Beach?
Yes, you can swim here! It’s actually an ideal spot for swimming. Here’s why:
- Sheltered waters: The beach has a crescent shape that helps shelter swimmers from strong currents.
- Lifeguards: During the season (May to September), there are lifeguards patrolling the beach for added safety.
- Calm conditions: Tolcarne is known for its generally calm waters, making it perfect for a relaxing swim.

However, it’s always important to assess the conditions before entering the water, regardless of the beach. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:
- Swim between the flags: If there are lifeguards present, always swim between the red and yellow flags. This designated area is patrolled by lifeguards.
- Never swim alone: Especially if you’re not a strong swimmer, it’s important to have a buddy with you when entering the water.

- Be aware of tides and currents: Before swimming, check the tide tables and be aware of any rip currents that may be present.
- Don’t swim under the influence: Alcohol or drugs can impair your judgment and swimming ability.
Is Tolcarne Beach dog-friendly?
Tolcarne Beach has a seasonal dog restriction. Here’s the breakdown:
- Off-Season: Dogs are welcome on the beach all day during the off-season.
- Peak Season: There is a dog ban during peak season, from May 1st to October 1st.

If you’re visiting Tolcarne Beach with your furry friend during peak season, there are a few other dog-friendly beaches nearby that you can explore together:
- Great Western Beach: This is the next beach along to the left-hand side as you look out to sea, and allows dogs all year round.
- Towan Beach: Two beaches along to the left-hand side, past Great Western, is Towan Beach which is dog-friendly.
- Porth Beach: This beach is a short walk from Tolcarne either to the righthand side passing Lusty Glaze across the sand at super low tide. Or if it’s cut off, up and over the Barrowfields and down Lusty Glaze Road. Porth Beach allows dogs during the low season. During the high season between 1st July and 31st August dogs are allowed outside of the hours 10am and 6pm.

Is Tolcarne Beach Private?
Tolcarne Beach is technically privately owned, but it is open to the public for free. This means anyone can access the beach and enjoy the beach, sea and most of the facilities. However, there is a holiday village located right on the beach that offers private accommodation with exclusive access to some amenities.

Why Tolcarne Beach is a Local Favourite
Tolcarne Beach’s popularity stems from its unique combination of factors. The sheltered cove provides a sense of intimacy and tranquillity, a welcome contrast to the larger and more exposed beaches. The beach’s facilities ensure a comfortable and convenient experience, while the variety of activities caters to all interests.

Additionally, the beach’s proximity to Newquay town centre makes it easily accessible, allowing visitors to combine a day at the beach with exploring the town’s shops, restaurants, and attractions.
