Lanhydrock is an almost-free family day out in Cornwall for those who want an escape from the beaches. National Trust members can park and access the house and formal gardens for free as well as the surrounding woodlands, playpark, shop, cafe and lawns outside of the house and formal gardens. Non-members can pay for parking and access everything aside from the manor house and formal gardens to keep it an almost-free family day out in Cornwall.

Simply take a picnic to keep this as an almost-free day out, or you can choose to buy food at the popular cafe which is not far from the car park.

Lanhydrock: A Cycling Paradise

Our primary reason for visiting Lanhydrock was to explore its cycling trails. It all started when our son got a new bike, and one of his teachers couldn’t believe we hadn’t taken him to Lanhydrock’s cycle trails yet. So, on a free weekend, we set off to discover what Lanhydrock had to offer. Little did we know the extent of this magnificent estate and all it had in store for us.

Not knowing what to expect on our first visit here, we were surprised to learn that Lanhydrock is not just about cycling; it’s a vast playground for families. From woodland walks to a dedicated play area for the kids, a welcoming cafe, a plant lover’s shop, and stunning formal gardens, there’s something here for everyone. And of course, there’s the grand house itself… and then the amazing Cornwall cycling trails at Lanhydrock which were much better than we anticipated!

There is an abundance of purpose-built cycling trails suitable for all ages and abilities, from mountain bike beginners to those with some more advances skills. With our son’s new mountain bike in tow, he was eager to put it to the test, and Lanhydrock was the perfect place. The skills area with fun bumps and ramps, suitable for both children and adults, provided an exciting warm-up and he would have happily stayed here all day testing his skills and new bike!

The woodland was crisscrossed with numerous trails, and we started with the easy route, which was perfect for our children aged 8 and 10 at the time. We eventually moved on to a moderate trail, which proved a bit too steep and tricky in places for our youngest. So, for now, we’ll stick to the easier trails until he gains more confidence!

It’s important to note that once you’re on one of the one-way trails, you’re committed until the end, so be sure to choose the right skill level, especially if you have children in tow.

We took our own bikes, but if you don’t have one or no means to take yours with you, no worries – Lanhydrock offers cycle hire on-site, making it incredibly convenient to explore this cycling paradise.
