In this blog post I’ll share a little about our recent visit to the beach at West Portholland in Cornwall. You’ll also find lots of our travel photos and a video of the day at the end of this travel blog post.
Portholland is a special place to my husband Ben as it’s where his Dad’s best friend lives. Ben’s Dad is originally from Cornwall but moved away from Cornwall as an adult and has since lived in a few different locations. His Dad’s best friend has always stayed in Cornwall.
We have visited him every time we’ve been to Cornwall. Ben has fond memories of visiting every summer as a child and now visits with his own children (our children!) to make even more amazing memories!
Picturesque Portholland
Portholland is split into two sides and two separate hamlets. East Portholland and West Portholland. When the tide goes out then the beach becomes one for a short while. When it’s back in then it’s split into two separate coves.
Portholland is a picturesque and unspoiled dinky little place. If you want to stretch your legs more then the beach is a bit bigger on the east side and more sandy too.
The west side is a very small cove with a few cottages, farm and a couple of holiday homes. There seem to be more cottages to the east side and some websites say there are toilets and a café in the east, but we’ve never been to see. We tend to stick to the west side.
According to Visit Cornwall there are only 40 residents in Portholland in total!
It’s super rocky and perfect for rock pooling!
When the tide goes out then there is some sand on the west side. The kids love searching in the rocks for sea animals, climbing over the rocks and making sand castles.
Or making dinosaur cities!
Reuben created a dinosaur city whilst Ben dug a channel of water from the rock pools to surround dinosaur city with water.
We stayed until the tide came back in and washed away dinosaur city! Nooooooo!

So nice to see Port Holland again. I used to live in the farmhouse opposite the chapel in West Port Holland. Pengelly Farm.
It looks like a beautiful place. Rock-pooling is always great fun, and educational!
