I finally ticked it off my to-do list this week as I enjoyed an amazing 10km walk from my home in Newquay, past Whipsiderry and along the South West Coast Path at Watergate Bay to Mawgan Porth… where Ben greeted me with a lift home and a warm pasty! Yum! (Cauliflower and onion bhaji from The Cornish Bakery if you’re wondering… vegan-friendly!)
Read on to see my thoughts and photos from this glorious stretch of the coastal path.
Watergate Bay to Mawgan Porth coast path walk
I didn’t take any photos from Whipsiderry to Watergate as I’ve done this walk a few times before. You can see my photos here if you are interested from one of my previous walks along this amazing coast:
That’s one of my favourite walks, but now I love this new stretch too as the scenery is suddenly quite different as you get past Watergate Bay and walk to Mawgan Porth. It’s almost like being in a different country!
Let’s start looking back across Watergate Bay and seeing Newquay in the distance:
Watergate Bay is one of our favourite beaches by Newquay. It’s so vast and out of season, it’s been so quiet for us. Even in season, it’s long enough to escape from the crowds. Some cool houses/holiday homes with grass roofing to blend into the landscape! Leaving Watergate Bay behind! The path ahead towards Mawgan. It gets very close to the edge so take care if you walk this route.Last bit of beach of Watergate.Watergate Bay.Watergate Bay and Newquay. My calm! I love coastal paths. So quiet and peaceful 😍Not far to Mawgan Porth.

So calm. Leaving the beach behind and just greenery and the sound of the waves.Luscious landscape 💚 In my element. This part was my favourite. It almost felt mountainous. With the mountain-looking cliffs, small paths, sunny blue sky and sheep alongside the coastal path, I almost could have been venturing through some Spanish mountains! The sea was such an amazing turquoise and teal colour. I could stare at this all day long and soak up the amazing colourways 🌊Onwards and upwards!Beacon Cove! What a great find. So perfect and unspoilt. There are no easy ways down. I didn’t make it down but admired from above. I wonder if it’s a good seal spot as no humans. I will check again in seal season. Griffin’s Point at Beacon Cove.Beacon Cove and Griffin’s Point. Looking glorious. Where I am. Not far from Mawgan. I’m currently tracking all my Newquay walks on an app called Strava and syncing it to City Strides. I’m completing a personal mission to walk every street in Newquay!Lovely landscape. Green 💚 Sea 🌊Beacon Cove looks very inviting! We thought it was a secluded cove with no access, but apparently, there are two paths down, so we’ll be back to see if we can find them and get down. They were not obvious, so it’s definitely not an easily accessible beach: https://cornwallbeaches.org.uk/North-Coast-Central-Cornwall/Beacon-Cove.pdf Or maybe we can kayak around on the SUPYAKS one day when the sea is calm. Not sure if it gets very calm here though!A last look back across to Newquay from Beacon Cove. You can see Watergate Bay cliffs too.Made it! Mawgan Porth in sight!Mawgan Porth.Mawgan Porth beach. I didn’t get a chance to go to the beach as we had plans, so Ben picked me up as soon as I arrived. But I’ll be back soon to walk this stretch again with Ben, explore the beach and perhaps grab a bite to eat. I saw they have a coffee shop and cafe called ‘Coasta’ – great name! From my house in Newquay to Mawgan Porth. A lovely 10k walk via Porth, Whipsiderry, Watergate Bay and Beacon Cove.
