I recently had the chance to return to Monsanto Mountain and Rock Village, a place I last explored back in February 2020. This time, my visit took place in December 2023, and I must say, the charm and beauty of this Portuguese village remain as stunning as ever. However, there’s an interesting twist – since my last visit, this picturesque location has been used as a filming location for the renowned series, Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones Influence Takes Root at Monsanto

Upon arrival, it was hard to miss the subtle transformation that had occurred. Large informational boards are now scattered around the village, proudly displaying details about which scenes from the epic fantasy series were shot in various locations. It’s clear that the village is making an effort to attract more tourists, especially the passionate fans of Game of Thrones.

For those who are ardent followers of the show, this addition might be a dream come true. Being able to stand on the very spot where their favourite scenes were filmed can be an exciting and surreal experience. It’s almost like stepping into the world of Westeros.

However, as much as I appreciate the enthusiasm for bringing more visitors to this charming village, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and concern. Monsanto is a place steeped in history and tradition, and its uniqueness has always been a magnet for tourists. Adding these boards, while informative, somewhat disrupts the village’s timeless ambience.

The juxtaposition of modern information boards against the backdrop of ancient stone houses and winding cobblestone streets is a visual reminder of the clash between tradition and the desire to capitalise on the Game of Thrones connection. While I understand the economic benefits this could bring to the area, I can’t help but wonder if there might have been a more subtle way to integrate this new attraction without compromising the village’s authenticity.

Preserving the Timeless Charm of Monsanto Rock Village

Nonetheless, as I walked through the village, I couldn’t deny that the beauty of Monsanto still shines through. The rocky terrain, unique stone houses built into boulders, and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside are as breathtaking as ever. It’s a place that truly transports you to a different time and makes you appreciate the rich history of Portugal.
