If you’re looking for an unforgettable Greece family experience during your Rhodes holiday, climbing up Tsambika Mountain from White Rock Beach is a must-do if you’re an outdoor adventure-loving family!
Nestled near Kolymbia, this scenic trek not only offers stunning views but also provides a memorable bonding experience for families. During our stay at the Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel, my husband Ben and I were eager to tackle this climb with our 9-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.
Here’s a detailed account of our adventure and tips for anyone considering this hike and lots of amazing photos of the incredible scenic views.
Getting Started: The Perfect Location
The Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel, where we stayed on our holiday, is ideally situated at the foot of Tsambika Mountain, making it the perfect base for your hiking adventure. As soon as we booked our holiday, my partner Ben and I knew we wanted to climb this prominent peak, which towered over our hotel and was visible from our balcony. The only hotel closer to the mountain was the Atlantic Asian Park, and from our beach access at White Rock Beach, the mountain beckoned us to explore its heights.

Preparing for the Hike
Before setting off, we ensured we were well-prepared for the climb. We chose to climb after breakfast to avoid the midday heat. Even though we visited Rhodes in October, it was still around 26 degrees Celsius at the peak of the day, which could be hot for a steep mountain climb, especially as it was full sun during our trip to Rhodes in October too. We packed plenty of water and snacks, knowing we’d need the energy for the steep trek ahead. Wearing our grippy trainers was essential, as the path to the top is steep and can be slippery, especially for families with children. Our children, aged 12 and 9, were excited but also cautious about the challenge that lay ahead.

The Hike Begins
The hike began at White Rock Beach, where we were greeted by the sight of other hikers, including goats, making their way up the mountain. However, the other hikers only climbed a short distance and then back down. The trail starts off steep, with a mixture of dry almost sandy soil which was quite slippy in places, and small stones and rocks that provide some grip but also present challenges when you catch a loose one. There are sections where you must climb over large rocks, making it vital to watch your footing carefully.

As we climbed higher, we stopped frequently to admire the breathtaking views of Kolymbia Beach and the surrounding landscapes. Each pause offered a chance to capture photos of our adventure, showcasing the stunning vistas from different vantage points. The elevation made every step worth it as we experienced the beauty of Rhodes from a new perspective.
A Challenging Ascent
The climb can be strenuous and is not suitable for those with mobility issues. I found myself a bit anxious about how steep the path was for our children, especially since I had to follow closely behind them to catch them if they slipped. We encountered some particularly slippery and very steep sections, where the sandy soil was loose underfoot, making it easy to lose your balance.

Thankfully, we noticed red stripes marking our path, guiding us as we climbed towards the summit. These markers helped us stay on track, giving us confidence as we approached the top. However, I started to worry about our descent as the steepness meant we would have to be extra careful coming down, in fact, it just seemed too steep to come back down. While climbing up, we managed to avoid any falls and retain our balance, but I knew it wouldn’t be as easy on the way down and hoped to find another route back down.

Finding an Alternative Route
Upon reaching the top of the part of the mountain we were climbing, we were greeted with panoramic views that were simply breathtaking. Looking back towards our hotel and Kolymbia Harbour, we marvelled at the sight. In the other direction, the golden sands of Tsambika Beach stretched out below, where we could see families enjoying the sun and even an inflatable aqua park set up on the water.

As we began our descent, I was relieved to discover that we could follow an alternative route that joined up with the path leading to Tsambika Monastery. This path was much less steep and, while it also included some challenges, it felt safer for the kids.

Unfortunately, our son had a couple of tumbles on the way down and ended up with a few cuts from the spiky bushes along the trail. However, he was a champ, and after a quick first-aid session with some plasters, he was ready to continue the descent, forgetting about his minor injuries.
We always find climbing back down mountains more challenging than going up. It seems much easier to slide and slip on the descent.

The View from the Top
Reaching the summit was a rewarding experience, and we took a moment to enjoy the incredible views. The landscape was dotted with natural beauty, and we were mesmerised by the distance we could see, especially over Tsambika Beach and beyond, a mixture of white rocky mountains, forest trees, sparkling blue ocean water and golden sands, it looked beautiful.

We hadn’t done much research on Tsambika Mountain before our climb, but we discovered afterwards that the footpath leading to Tsambika Monastery, not far from where we climbed, includes around 300 steps leading to additional viewing platforms. Had we known about this beforehand, we would have definitely explored that path as well. The views from those platforms must be spectacular!
Tips for Hiking Tsambika Mountain in Rhodes
If you’re considering this hike during your stay in Kolymbia, here are a few tips to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience:
- Start Early: To avoid the midday heat, it’s best to begin your hike early in the morning. This not only keeps you cool but also allows you to enjoy the sunrise over the sea and mountain if you start really early!
- Wear Appropriate Footwear: As mentioned, grippy trainers or hiking shoes are essential for navigating the steep and sometimes slippery terrain. Comfortable clothing that you can move in is also recommended.
- Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water, especially for the children, to keep everyone hydrated. The climb can be tiring, and staying hydrated will help maintain your energy levels.
- Pack Snacks: High-energy snacks like nuts, fruit, or energy bars will give you a quick boost when you need it. We found it helpful to take breaks for snacks to recharge during our ascent.
- Take Your Time: There’s no rush to reach the top. Take your time, enjoy the journey, and capture plenty of photos along the way. The landscape is stunning, and you won’t want to miss the views.
- Plan for the Descent: Be mindful of the return journey. The descent can be just as challenging, if not more, than the climb, so take care with your footing. If you have younger children, it may be wise to have them go slowly behind you, and hold hands for safety.
- Consider Alternate Routes: If you’re feeling adventurous, look for the paths that lead to the Tsambika Monastery, which can offer a less steep return trip and an opportunity to explore the monastery itself.

Final Thoughts: An Unforgettable Family Adventure
Climbing Tsambika Mountain was one of the highlights of our holiday on Rhodes Island in Greece. The breathtaking views, the thrill of the climb, and the sense of accomplishment we felt at the summit made it an unforgettable experience. Our children, despite the minor setbacks, enjoyed the adventure and learned the importance of perseverance and exploration.
Next time we visit Rhodes, we’ll be sure to include the Tsambika Monastery in our plans. The mountain offers not only a challenging hike but also a chance to connect with nature and each other as a family.
