Free Things To Do in Kolymbia, Rhodes

Kolymbia isn’t a place you come to tick things off a list. It’s a place you stay when you want warm air, space to breathe, and days that unfold slowly without feeling like you need to spend lots of money to enjoy yourself.

During our two times staying here, especially when travelling as a family, we realised that some of the best moments in Kolymbia cost absolutely nothing. Walking, swimming, watching light change, and simply noticing what’s around you become the highlights.

If you’re visiting Rhodes outside peak summer, particularly after reading about why Rhodes works so well in October, Kolymbia really comes into its own. Here are the best free things to do in Kolymbia, based on how we spent our days.

15 Surprising Things About Rhodes

After visiting Rhodes twice, in October 2024 and October 2025, we came away with a long list of things that surprised us. Some were wonderful. Some were confusing. A few were genuinely disappointing. All of them shaped how the island felt as a place to explore.

If you’re planning a trip to Rhodes, particularly outside peak summer, these are the things that surprised us the most.

Why Is There So Much Litter in Rhodes? A Traveller’s Perspective on Pollution Across the Island

During both our October 2024 and October 2025 trips to Rhodes, we were genuinely shocked by the sheer amount of litter and plastic pollution we saw across the island. This was not just limited to busy tourist beaches or town centres. We saw rubbish scattered along roads and pavements in residential areas, in neighbourhood green spaces, beside walking routes near Kolymbia, and even off established paths on mountain walks where very few people go.

What stood out most was where the litter was. It appeared in places with minimal tourist footfall, far from bars, beach clubs, and crowded attractions. We saw rubbish up hillsides, in bushes, and off walking trails where hikers and nature lovers usually tread carefully. In our experience, people who hike mountains and explore nature tend to respect the environment. They carry their rubbish out. What we saw in Rhodes did not align with careless tourism alone. And on researching online, many people are quick to say it’s the tourists who are littering.

We live in Newquay in Cornwall, a major UK tourist destination where the population increases dramatically in summer. While tourism does bring extra litter, it does not look like this. The scale and spread of rubbish we saw in Rhodes felt different and deeper rooted.

This article shares what we personally observed, looks at why the problem may exist, and explores why blaming tourists alone must not tell the full story.

Kolymbia Beach and White Rock Beach in Rhodes: What to Expect Before You Go

Kolymbia Beach, sometimes written Kolimbia, is one of the most accessible beaches on Rhodes if you are staying in Kolymbia itself. It is long, easy to reach, and lined by hotels and organised beach areas.

Next to it, at the far end, is White Rock Beach, a smaller, quieter stretch under Tsambika mountain. The two beaches sit side by side but are separated by water so you cannot walk along the sand from one to the other, although you can swim between them.

We have visited both more than once and each has its own atmosphere. Kolymbia Beach has more facilities, watersports and a restaurant overlooking the sea. White Rock Beach feels more tucked away and peaceful, almost hidden at the end of the bay. If you like a beach that has variety, these two are a great combination for dipping in and out of during your holiday.

Navarone Bay and Beach Review, Rhodes

Navarone Bay is one of those places you picture when you think of dreamy Greek waters. Deep turquoise, quiet, scenic and almost cinematic when the light hits right.

We first discovered it on the Hippo Submarine boat trip last year, where we swam in the bay surrounded by the most vivid blue water we had ever seen. It was the kind of swim you remember long after the holiday ends. In fact, my favourite and most memorable swim in the sea to date.

This year we returned to experience it from the beach. We’d seen the beach from the boat and it looked so peaceful. So quiet and like the sand was white rather than golden. It looked ideal for a beach to visit another time, so that’s what we did when we returned to Rhodes. But the beach itself didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

Rhodes Toy Museum Review (& Retro Arcade!)

On the final day of our family holiday to Rhodes, we found ourselves in that strange travel-day limbo. Bags packed, villa checked out, but hours left before our evening flight. We didn’t want the beach. We didn’t want to get wet or sandy. Everything was packed! We just needed something fun for the kids to pass the time before airports, queues and sitting still took over.

Ben had spotted something unusual on the map a few days earlier. A toy museum. In the middle of the mountains!

St. Nektarios Monastery & The Hollow Tree in Archipolis, Rhodes

On our last day in Rhodes we woke up knowing it was going to be one of those slightly strange travel days. The kind where you’re packed and checked out but nowhere near ready to head for the airport. We had to check out in the morning, but our flight wasn’t until the evening. With the airport only a one hour drive away, if that, we had lots of time left for some exploring.

We still had the hire car until the evening and could drop it at the airport. This meant we could visit a few places before our flight home. We picked a couple of places along the route to the airport, simple stops that could fill the time without being tiring. St. Nektarios Monastery near Archipolis became one of them.
