A romantic yurt escape in the Herefordshire countryside

I’d wanted to try glamping for ages, and a yurt felt like the perfect way to do it. Round, warm, rustic, and a little bit bohemian. We chose the Romantic Yurt for Two at Michaelchurch Escley, tucked beside The Bridge Inn and surrounded by peaceful countryside, with the Black Mountains rising in the distance.

We were spending most of our spare time renovating our home, so this simple countryside break felt like a breath of fresh air. A night to pause, reconnect and enjoy some quiet.

Arriving at the yurt

The setting charmed us straight away. The yurt sits by a small campsite near the pub and a B&B, so everything you need is within a short stroll. Opening the door, we both said “wow”. It was warm and welcoming, with colourful throws and rugs, a wood-burning stove ready to light, and even a chandelier adding a touch of glamour.

The bed was large and inviting, piled with cushions and blankets. It looked like the perfect place to curl up after a countryside dinner and a brisk evening walk.

Inside the yurt

All the thoughtful touches were there: a kettle with hot drinks, fresh water, towels, toiletries and a small DVD player with a few films. The toilets were a short walk away, so you still had that hint of “proper camping”, just without sacrificing comfort.

That evening we chose a film we hadn’t seen, made hot drinks, and settled under the blankets while the log burner crackled. Calm. Cosy. Quiet. It was exactly what we needed.

Being next to The Bridge Inn was a real bonus. We wandered over for dinner and found generous home-cooked portions and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Proper countryside pub food that sets you up for the night – best to arrive hungry!

Breakfast the next morning was served in the adjoining B&B, a classic farmhouse setup with everyone around a big kitchen table chatting while the hosts cooked. It felt homely and sociable, and breakfast was included in the price of our stay.

Exploring the Black Mountains: Grwyne Fawr Dam and Reservoir

Before checking in, we’d spent the afternoon at Grwyne Fawr Dam and Reservoir in the Black Mountains. It’s a serene spot with glassy water, rugged hills and a feeling of space that makes you slow down. The walk is scenic without being demanding, and the views are the kind that stay with you.

If you’re staying anywhere nearby, it’s well worth the detour.
