The Harbour Beach in Newquay: What to Expect

Since moving to Newquay in Cornwall a few years ago, we have frequented the historic Newquay Harbour and regularly visited The Harbour Beach. Not only does the working harbour offer excitement and views because of the many boats bobbing about in the water, but it also has a small sandy beach which is accessible at mid to low tide. Read on to learn more about The Harbour Beach in Newquay and what makes it so special and worth a visit.

The Harbour Beach in Newquay: A Local’s Guide

Harbour Beach might be one of Newquay’s smallest beaches, but it punches above its weight in charm and character. It’s a favourite amongst locals, especially families with young children. Here’s why:

  • Size and Accessibility: It’s true, the beach disappears completely at high tide. But during low tide, a beautiful sandy cove emerges, perfect for building sandcastles, paddling, or simply relaxing.
  • Sheltered & Family-Friendly: Tucked away inside the harbour walls, the beach offers a calm and sheltered spot. The lack of waves makes it ideal for young children who can play safely on the shoreline.
  • Boating Dreams: One of the biggest joys of Harbour Beach, according to my children at least, is picking out our favourite boats and choosing which ones we’d own if we could!

Seasonal Food, Refreshments and Entertainment at The Boathouse

Right behind the beach sits The Boathouse, a seasonally open haven for both kids and adults. This bar offers not only public restrooms but also a fantastic open deck with stunning views of the harbour and beach.

It’s the perfect spot to grab a drink and a bite to eat while the kids play on the sand. They have a variety of street food vendors with options you can order directly to your table using their app, including vegan-friendly options in Newquay.

In the summer, The Boathouse bustles with a relaxed and friendly vibe. Live music during the summer adds to the vibrant atmosphere. You can order food and drinks directly to enjoy on the beach itself – they have large wooden bench tables on the sand during the summer season.

If you prefer a picnic on Harbour Beach, there’s usually plenty of space to spread out and soak up the sun at low tide. We recommend grabbing some chips from Harbour Chippy, it’s just at the top of the road that leads down to the harbour, and then enjoying them on the beach. Just watch out for seagulls!

Winter Tranquility

During the winter months, The Boathouse closes, and the beach transforms into a peaceful haven. The harbour itself remains active, so it’s still a great spot for a bracing walk with beautiful coastal views and the hustle and bustle of boats coming and going.

Keep in mind that at high tide, the beach disappears completely. The water can even reach right up to the Boathouse! There’s no access across to the other side of the harbour at high tide either as access to the steps is cut off by the water, so plan your visit accordingly. For coastal path walks, you can take the road up and around the harbour to reach the other side.

Newquay Harbour Festival Fun

On a brighter note, 2023 saw the launch of the Newquay Harbour Festival, a free event with food and entertainment held in September. Hopefully, this will become an annual tradition, adding to the vibrancy of the harbour.

Newquay Harbour: A Local’s Tips:

  • Parking can be tricky at Harbour Beach, particularly during peak season. It’s pay and display. but there are limited spaces. Be prepared to walk a short distance from a nearby car park such as Fore Street car park or the pay-and-display car park next to Newquay Golf Club. (Don’t park in the actual golf club car park as that’s for members only, but there is a payable car park next door for visitors to Newquay).
  • It’s easy to walk to if you like to walk… For those like me who like walking, it’s accessible on foot from everywhere in Newquay, depending on how far you like to walk!
  • There are no lifeguards on duty at Harbour Beach, so paddle at your own risk and keep an eye on children closely as this is a working harbour with many boats and crafts coming in and out including surfers, kayakers and paddleboarders. Nearby Towan Beach has lifeguards in the summer and is suited to swimming and bodyboarding with children.
  • Remember, this is a working harbour, so you might see some debris like ropes and chains in the water. They are also on the beach anchoring the boats, so watch out for the low-level taut ropes which often camouflage into the sand and are easily tripped over!
  • Check out local events at the harbour and boathouse, to maximise your experience at the harbour check out a live music night during the summer at The Boathouse or join in with the newly established Harbour Festival in September. There’s often a free firework display over the Harbour at midnight on New Year’s Eve too.

Can you swim in Newquay Harbour?

While The Harbour Beach isn’t officially designated for swimming due to it being a working harbour with boat traffic, many people paddle along the shoreline. I’ve even enjoyed a dip in the early mornings (around 7 am) without any problems. However, be prepared for a strong fishy aroma! There’s a harbourmaster, and while I haven’t heard of anyone being told not to swim, they may not be thrilled about it, especially regarding the harbour jumping some locals used to do on Fridays which I have heard they were not keen on and wanting to stop.

Important Considerations:

  • During the summer, the beach bustles with activity, including people swimming, paddleboarding, and inflatables. Generally, a relaxed atmosphere prevails, but it’s crucial to be mindful of boats and stay out of their way for safety reasons.
  • If you’re looking for a proper swimming experience, consider heading to the next beach along, Towan Beach, which continues to Great Western and Tolcarne. These beaches offer better swimming conditions depending on the tide. On calmer wave days, Watergate and Whipsiderry are also great options.
  • The Gannel River is another fantastic spot for a swim, but only at high tide. Otherwise, you might not find enough water! Be mindful of the strong currents there.

A Local’s Recommendation:

While The Harbour Beach might not be the ideal swimming spot, it offers a unique charm and a glimpse into the working harbour life. For a refreshing swim, consider the nearby beaches I mentioned. Remember, safety is paramount, so be mindful of your surroundings and enjoy the beautiful Newquay coastline!
