What is the TUI Hippo Submarine Cruise in Rhodes?

The Hippo Submarine Cruise in Rhodes offers a unique way to explore Lindos and the beautiful Navarone Bay. It’s aboard a unique glass-bottomed boat so you can see under the sea as you travel on this boat trip in the beautiful Greek waters.

Starting at the Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel where we stayed, we set off early, boarding a coach arranged by TUI at 8:35 am.

By 9:30 am, we were on the Hippo Submarine, ready for a 3-hour adventure that would prove to be a hit with our entire family!

This excursion, with its combination of glass-bottom views, scenic Lindos coastline, and a swim in Navarone Bay, provided an unforgettable experience. From entertaining staff to vibrant underwater views, this trip has much to offer families visiting Rhodes.

After the TUI arranged trip, a coach was waiting ready to bring us back to our hotel, so all transfers were included making it an easy day out.

Boarding the Hippo Submarine and Setting Sail from St Paul’s Bay, past the Acropolis of Lindos

Upon arriving in Lindos, we were excited to board the Hippo Submarine. Known for its glass-bottom boat design, it allows passengers, children in particular, to enjoy underwater views from a comfortable, air-conditioned viewing area below deck.

This trip takes you along the coast of Lindos, showcasing impressive sights such as the Acropolis of Lindos and the pristine beaches below. The Acropolis of Lindos is the second largest acropolis in Greece, after the Acropolis of Athens.

While our kids spent most of their time viewing the marine life through the glass bottom, my partner and I relaxed on the top deck, soaking in the coastal scenery, sunshine, and refreshing sea breeze.

Our trip included a free drink each which was a nice surprise as we weren’t aware of this when booking. We chose an early morning beer for me and Ben, and the kids had bottled water each. The other choices were fizzy drinks which they’re not keen on.

As it was the end of the season, we were able to get a second beer each for free as they were trying to get rid of some stock! If you’re considering why to visit Rhodes in October, this quieter, end-of-season period often brings fewer crowds and extra perks, like our complimentary drink.

A Swim in Navarone Bay – Crystal Clear Turquoise Waters

One of the highlights of the Hippo Submarine Cruise was the swim stop in Navarone Bay. This idyllic spot boasts some of the clearest, most turquoise waters in Rhodes. While it may be tempting to skip the swim, especially if you didn’t pack swimwear, don’t miss out on this opportunity!

Our children initially hesitated, but with encouragement from the friendly crew, our 9-year-old son decided to dive in—his first swim in the crystal-clear waters, which he did in his underwear as we hadn’t brought swim gear on the boat trip!

Swimming in Navarone Bay felt different from other spots in Rhodes, such as the hotel beach or Chalki Island where we also swam in the sea. Here, the mineral-rich water seemed to make us buoyant, giving us a feeling of floating more easily. The water was incredibly clear, allowing us to enjoy a unique perspective on the natural beauty of Rhodes.

Glass-Bottom Views of Lindos’ Underwater World

Our kids were fascinated by the underwater views through the glass bottom, particularly during the stop at Navarone Bay. While there wasn’t much marine life visible along the route, the crew’s practice of throwing fish food into the water attracted some fish for closer views, which kept our children entertained. For those looking to experience the best of Lindos from both above and below the water, this glass-bottom feature is a unique way to engage with the region’s marine environment without needing to snorkel.

Lindos itself is a place steeped in history and natural beauty. From the historic acropolis to the village’s narrow streets, Lindos is a destination worth exploring both by land and sea. Seeing the acropolis from the boat was a special highlight, and it reminded me of my teenage visit over 20 years ago. A return visit to Lindos on foot is now on my travel list, allowing me to take in its charm and revisit these stunning views in a new way.

Friendly Staff and an Extra Drink Bonus

The Hippo Submarine’s crew made this trip enjoyable for everyone. They were not only entertaining but also attentive to passengers, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Since we visited at the end of the season in October, the staff went the extra mile, giving us an extra complimentary drink beyond the one included in our booking. Small gestures like this made us feel valued and added to the positive experience.

Our choice of hotel, Atlantica Aegean Blue, was convenient and family-friendly, providing easy access to excursions like the Hippo Submarine trip. If you’re curious about our full experience at the hotel, you can check out my review of the Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel in Rhodes.
