About me, some of our travels, and the Travel Vixta blog

Welcome to Travel Vixta, a family travel blog sharing our travelling adventures, travel tips with kids, UK days out and events, Bongo campervan stories, kid-free trips, travel bucket lists and, well, anything travel-related!

I’m Victoria, married to Ben, and we have two children (2012 and 2015).

Longing to travel

As soon as our children became school-age, the baby years were behind us and our income started to increase, I was itching to travel more!

Travel is something I always regretted not doing more of when I was younger and had fewer commitments.  I knew many people who went on gap years or around-the-world trips for a year and I always thought I couldn’t afford it due to a debt crisis I caused myself during my late teens and early 20s, plus I was always committed to my job and previous relationships.

If I could turn back the clock I’d save up and travel around the world!

Anyway, once the kids were a bit older, we were able to start thinking about some more family holidays. Whilst they were young we went to Germany a few times to visit family, so we did already have experience of travel with kids, just not much in the way of our own family holidays… only family visits.

Family holidays with children

When the kids were around ages 6 and 3 we went on a very rainy budget trip to Cornwall which prompted me to then book an all-inclusive family trip to Fuerteventura for some guaranteed sunshine and a more relaxing time with no chores! We spent most of the week in Cornwall cooking, cleaning and trying to dry our sodden clothes!

We had a great time in Fuerteventura and even years later our daughter remembers the holiday to Fuerteventura and she often asks if we can return. It’s amazing she still has memories of this holiday and shows how precious holidays and family time can be. These are often the memories that stick with people for life… those moments out of the normal family routine, away from the mundane. A chance to do something different together, to connect and have valuable family time.

Buying a Bongo

In 2018 we decided to purchase a Mazda Bongo Friendee pop-top campervan to allow us to explore more of the UK and Europe on a budget. It’s a 1995 version and we didn’t quite realise what we were getting ourselves into with repairs and the cost ahead…

But we have kept the Bongo, investing a lot of time and effort into it. Well, Ben has! He likes to learn how to do as many of the repairs and upgrades himself to keep the cost down and to learn new skills, so this has been really useful for us. He’s written a few Bongo advice articles on this blog and I’m sure there will be more to come in the future.

The Bongo has been a great purchase for family days out in the rain (it’s like having a room on wheels with lots of space and even a table to eat at!), short camping trips, longer European trips on a budget, a multi-person vehicle (great when family and friends visit and we can all go in one car) and even useful for my husband’s work which has involved transporting handmade furniture to customers and doing handyman work.

It’s not just useful as a campervan, but we use it for so many other things that suit our lifestyle, even useful for all our home renovations and DIY! The Bongo was a great investment and hopefully, all the repairs will help it last as long as possible!

Center Parcs experiences

We had already booked a short trip to Center Parcs in 2018 before buying the Bongo as we wanted to see what all the fuss was about, but typically our new Bongo needed some ridiculously expensive repairs within a couple of months of buying it, so we had to watch the pennies and mostly do free activities at Center Parcs in Longleat as we had no idea how much the repairs were going to cost on our return.

Luckily, years later in 2023, we were able to go to another Center Parcs in Whinfell Forest and take part in a few of the Center Parcs paid activities and enjoy the on-site restaurants. We had an amazing time and it was another memorable experience for the kids, but expensive!

If you’re trying to do Center Parcs on a budget, here’s a list of the free things you can do at Center Parcs.

In 2025 we booked a last minute trip for the May/June half term to Center Parcs in Longleat and had a blast! I think we’re done with Center Parcs for a while now though…. maybe until the kids are older teens and I’d like to try the high tops adventure, zip line and spa!

Camping… yes or no?

Ben loves camping and I’m trying to love it!  Ben’s quite happy staying in a tent, but I’d rather have an actual bed, so let’s say the Bongo van at the time of purchase was a compromise! I want to love camping as I love nature, but perhaps I never had the best experiences squished into tiny tents on uncomfortable ground… maybe I will love camping yet with the van and a larger tent!

The kids find camping exciting and Ben loves it, so we will be going on some camping trips. Of course, they are affordable too and a great way to explore more and afford even more holidays compared to expensive hotels and resorts!

In 2023 when looking for an awning for the Bongo, we decided to invest in a large family tent instead. As the kids are getting older we thought a tent could give us more flexibility with camping holidays with or without a Bongo as we can’t be sure we’ll have the Bongo in the future given its age. So watch out for more experiences of camping on my blog, in a tent!

Ben counts a stay in the UK as a holiday, however I’ve always thought a ‘proper’ holiday involves getting on a plane to go somewhere with guaranteed sunshine, golden sands and turquoise seas!

Oh and ideally all-inclusive or eating out so there’s not a bunch of chores and housework to do like when at home! A rainy camping week in England doesn’t do it for me as a ‘real’ holiday experience… but Ben and the kids may convert me one day!

(Quick update in 2025- they haven’t convinced me and now my daughter is not so keen either after some bad nights sleeps while camping, so we are selling the Bongo and our tents!).

It’s tricky for us to get all-inlcusive though as we are a vegan-family and options are limited. Oh and most all-inclusive resorts make us all sleep in a room together, or the kids on a sofa bed where they will squabble, and neither of those things constitute a “holiday” in my mind! The kids need their own room and beds!

We did go to Atlantica Aegean Blue for an all-inclusive holiday in Rhodes in 2024 and the hotel was amazing, but we did struggle with sharing a room!

A mixed bag of holidays

I love nature, mountains, lakes, oceans and coastal paths.  I prefer to disappear somewhere with fewer people and explore on foot.  However, I won’t say no to a boat trip! Or a quieter resort that’s not in the hustle and bustle of a main strip of a popular holiday resort. I love the sun and I love warm. I so love the ocean and I crave it when I haven’t seen it for a while.

Overall, I guess our family holiday and travel expectations are pretty mixed… a mixture of some affordable hotels, Airbnb stays, camping, campervanning, exploring on foot, quieter places, countryside, nature, hiking, beaches, mountains, oceans, sunshine, warm, a few city breaks (nothing too built up or overly modern) and perhaps the odd slightly more expensive treat every once in a while such as a Center Parcs stay, or an all-inclusive villa holiday (do they exist?!).

Mainly, we try and make our money go as far as possible so we can have more travel experiences. But as we earn more (fingers crossed), we hope to have more choice and some luxury experiences!

Germany and Portugal

We have family in both Germany and Portugal, so we can explore some of the locations near where our family live in both these countries when we visit them. Here are some examples:

Travel before kids

Pre-kids I travelled a little and Ben mostly with work.  I started this blog in November 2018 and in my first blog post ‘Welcome to Travel Vixta‘ I share more about our history of travelling, so I won’t repeat it all here. Go have a read 🙂

Our travel diary

Since starting my travel blog, we now share lots of our days out and travel adventures in our travel diary.

It’s a great way to keep a memento of our travel adventures and maybe to inspire others who are researching places to travel or who want to “virtually travel” through our experiences and photos!

That’s where you’ll find all our travel adventures since I started this blog, as they won’t all be listed on this page!

Relocating and more adventures

In September 2021 we moved to Cornwall from Gloucestershire!  We are excited to explore this beautiful county and share our adventures and stunning photos of Cornwall on our blog.

We both love the ocean, coastal walks and beach life. My husband had family roots in Cornwall, although they have passed or moved away now. He has lots of fond memories of summers in Cornwall as a child, so it’s good to bring the family name back to the area and to be able to raise our children in such an incredible place!

Keep an eye on our travel diary category for many ideas for things to do in Cornwall and the amazing places we have found.

I think it’s going to feel like a travel adventure for a few years… there’s so much to explore!
