REVIEW: The Headland Hotel Rebalance Spa Half Day

If you’re seeking a serene spa escape with top-notch amenities, The Headland in Newquay is an exceptional choice. Nestled on the stunning Cornish coast, this iconic hotel is renowned for its luxurious offerings.

Recently, my husband and I experienced the hotel’s Rebalance Spa Half Day package as a treat for Ben’s birthday while the children were at school.

This blog post details what’s included in the half spa day, my honest thoughts, and offers a glimpse into what makes this spa experience so special.

(We didn’t take our devices into the thermal journey or the Aqua Club, so we could fully immerse ourselves into relaxing and rebalancing for the day, kid-free while the children were at school. While I don’t have many photos of our half spa day, I will share my thoughts in words accompanied by images from The Headland’s social media and some provided by their media team for my use.)

A Taste of Luxury: The Rebalance Spa Half Day Package

The Rebalance Spa Half Day package is a perfect introduction to the hotel’s wellness facilities. The package includes an hour of blissful relaxation in the spa’s thermal journey, followed by an invigorating dip in the many pools of the Aqua Club. To complete the experience, a 25-minute treatment of your choice and a delicious one-course lunch with a glass of fizz are also included.

The 25-minute treatment includes a choice of either a back, neck & shoulder massage with wave stone, a scalp massage or a mini facial. Both in desperate need of a massage and working on our knotty shoulders, we each opted for the wave stone massage.

As we are both vegan, I requested the menu before booking and was pleased to see more than half the lunch options were vegan-friendly, so no worries there.  Perfect!

We paid £210 in total, for two people, for the Rebalance Spa Half Day.  The cost, per person (July 2024) is £105 Monday through Thursday, or £115 on a Friday or Saturday.

Being a five-star iconic hotel, this was the sort of price I was expecting.  While we wouldn’t be able to partake in something this costly on a regular basis, it was a good price for the experience for a special occasion.

The Headland’s description from their website is as follows:

“Restore your senses with a half day at our five-bubble luxury spa. Unwind with a choice of 25-minute treatments and indulge in a delicious lunch while enjoying the Atlantic ocean views before diving into the AquaClub and soaking off in The Spa’s thermal journey.”

This was our first experience of both the spa and the Aqua Club at The Headland Hotel.  We had been keen to see what the hotel was like, in particular the Aqua Club which we have read so much about.

Read on as I take you through each element of our half spa day, what we experienced and my honest thoughts.

Spa Thermal Journey: A Soothing Start

Our spa journey began with an hour in the adult-only spa thermal area, a perfect way to unwind and set the tone for the rest of the day. The thermal journey included access to a range of relaxing facilities, such as the Cornish Salt Room, a jacuzzi, and a sauna.

The small spa pool also had areas with jets and a waterfall back massaging fountain.

The ambience was calming, with a focus on creating a soothing environment that allowed us to relax completely, providing the perfect escape from the outside world. The decor featured real pebble and stone walls, adding to the luxurious feel.

There were perhaps two other couples and a single person in the spa at the same time as us, making it very peaceful and exclusive.  We were able to enjoy all the rooms and features by ourselves without it feeling crowded.

Although I thought one hour would be a short timeframe for the spa thermal journey, it was actually long enough to explore every part of the spa, and by the time the hour was up, we were ready to move on to the Aqua Club which we were most keen to explore!

Aqua Club: A Stunning Oasis

Following our thermal journey, we spent an hour in the Aqua Club. The Aqua Club at The Headland Hotel is a highlight, offering spectacular sea views from the outdoor pools, and a range of impressive water features.

Outdoors, there’s a small pool with sea views, within this is an adult-only jacuzzi for 8 people maximum with the same stunning sea view window.  There’s also another pool with various sections of seating with water jets and “air beds” to lie back on and relax.

The indoor lap pool, with its stunning lagoon green colour, was my favourite and has highly tempted me, as a local, to join The Ocean Club, a membership for locals.  It has a premium price tag, but these are premium facilities and since moving to Newquay I have missed a luxurious pool to swim in each day… this could be the one!

Also indoors at the Aqua Club is a sauna room, an indoor pool filled with jacuzzi-style seats and air beds, and a shallow splash pool with a mushroom-style water fountain which would be perfect for children, but we enjoyed lying in this warm pool and relaxing while taking in the environment and enjoying a moment’s peace.

Again, the decor is very tasteful with many real stone walls and maintained to a high standard.  It’s clear that no expense has been spared in creating this luxurious aquatic playground.

While we didn’t use them, the outdoor area had plenty of available sun loungers which looked very soft and comfortable.  In between the indoor and outdoor areas is a cafe called The Deck, which again, we didn’t experience but it looked beautifully decorated with a chilled vibe for refreshments.

Treatment of Choice: Wave Stone Massage Bliss

A key part of our Rebalance Spa experience was the 25-minute treatment of choice. We each opted for the Wave Stone Massage, focusing on our neck, shoulders, and back.

This treatment was both invigorating and relaxing, providing much-needed relief and rejuvenation. I had asked the therapist to concentrate on my shoulders, which I knew held my stress and were badly knotted.

The skilled therapist’s hands, combined with the warmth of the stones, melted away tension. It was the perfect way to unwind and recharge.

Although I anticipated 25 minutes would be too short to fully relax and enjoy the massage, somehow the time passed reasonably slowly and it was a great introduction to the wave stone massage which I’d never experienced before.

I’d certainly opt for a longer treatment on a future visit if possible!

Lunch: Vegan Options Abound

To finish our half-day spa experience, we enjoyed a one-course lunch with a glass of fizz. The hotel’s restaurant offers a variety of vegan options, which is perfect for those with dietary preferences. We tried the vegan Moving Mountains Burger, with one of us choosing fries and the other a side salad.

We did manage to snap our Moving Mountains burger at The Spa Lounge restaurant which has many vegan options in Newquay.

Paired with a refreshing glass of prosecco, the meal was delicious and satisfying. The diverse menu, including more vegan-friendly options like mushroom and cashew linguine and smashed beetroot salad, makes it clear that The Headland’s dining experience is both varied and high-quality.

We were also impressed by the selection of delicious-sounding smoothies which we’d like to return to try another day.

Ambience and Service: Exceptional All Round

The Headland excels not only in its facilities but also in its service. The staff were friendly and accommodating, ensuring that our visit was as enjoyable as possible. The place was not overcrowded, which added to the relaxed atmosphere. The attention to detail in both the spa and Aqua Club areas was evident, with no expense spared in creating a luxurious environment and maintaining the decor and cleanliness to high standards.

Conclusion: The Perfect Introduction to The Headland in Newquay

Our Rebalance Spa Half Day at The Headland was a fantastic introduction to what the hotel and its amenities have to offer. It has left us eager to return for a longer stay. While the half-day was a wonderful introduction, we can’t wait to return for a longer stay (when the children are older and we have more kid-free time) to fully immerse ourselves in the hotel’s offerings.

Next time, we plan to enjoy an extended Aqua Club session and explore additional treatments, such as the VOYA Muscle Melter treatment, which is calling our names! It sounds divine and perfect for my tense knotty shoulder muscles.

The hotel’s variety of vegan dining options and the enticing smoothie selection make the culinary experience worth revisiting as well.  The hotel has other restaurants too which I’d be keen to explore.

In summary, The Headland provides a luxurious and rejuvenating experience with its exceptional spa, impressive Aqua Club, and delightful dining options. It’s a perfect choice for a relaxing getaway or a special treat.
