The Greyhound Inn Wilton Accommodation and Vegan Food Review

Nestled in the heart of Wiltshire, England, The Greyhound Inn at Wilton is a 17th-century coaching inn that combines rustic charm with a surprising and innovative vegan menu.

In autumn 2023 we stayed one night at The Greyhound Inn Wilton after a revisit to Stonehenge. Read on for our review of this historic public house, the accommodation, dinner and breakfast.

A cosy place to sleep after a visit to Stonehenge

We recently revised Stonehenge as our eight-year-old had been studying Stonehenge at school and was keen to visit in real life. We had visited Stonehenge previously, but he was too young to remember.

Being over three hours from our home by car, we decided to visit during a school half-term and make it into a short family holiday with an overnight stay nearby and a family meal.

When researching for a place to stay to treat our family to a little luxury, I found very positive reviews online for Greyhound Inn Wilton. They had a family room with two bedrooms which sounded ideal.

The address is 4 Market Place, Wilton, Salisbury SP2 0HT and it was just 12 minutes by car from Stonehenge!

A couple of emails back and forth and I discovered they had a vegan menu, vegan desserts and could cater for us as vegans with their bed and breakfast offering. Perfect!

We booked the accommodation and were excited to stay after we visited Stonehenge.

Oh, it’s important to mention that we also booked a dinner reservation. They have a very popular restaurant, so booking in advance if you wish to eat at the location is recommended.

Our first impressions of The Greyhound Inn at Wilton

We were very impressed when we arrived at The Greyhound Inn. The pub looked well maintained from the outside and being overnight guests, we were able to park directly outside. Much appreciated as it was raining heavily on our arrival.

We were directed to our accommodation which was the Coach House Duplex Suite. You can view all the available rooms here.

The small two-bed apartment had much more than we needed for a one-night stay and would be perfect for those looking for a longer self-catering trip in the area. However, with two children in tow, it was perfect as it offered two bedrooms, each with their own en-suite, TVs in each bedroom (which the kids were very excited about), as well as a kitchenette, table and small social area.

The accommodation was warm and clean. The bedrooms were well-decorated and the beds were comfortable. We’d stay at this accommodation again if visiting the area.

To access the coach house, we had to go through the inn and its very charming beer garden! I bet it’s a hotspot for locals and tourists in the summer as it has beautifully decorated seating pods

Vegan dinner at The Greyhound Inn

Now, onto the star of the show: the Greyhound’s vegan menu! Forget limp salads and unimaginative sides – this pub takes plant-based dining to a whole new level.

With a large and varied vegan menu, we were each able to enjoy a different vegan meal: ragu, ravioli, a vegan burger and a vegan roast dinner!

There were lots of “mmmm”s and “yummies” as we tucked into the well-cooked and delicious food, all eyeing up and envying each other’s plates in the process as every meal looked tasty!

Once finished, we were even presented with a choice of vegan puddings!

Accommodating staff and vegan breakfast

While the room we stayed in may seem a little expensive for a night (we paid around £200), you certainly get what you pay for when it comes to food and service.

The room was warm, the beds were comfortable, we had two en-suites, the bathrooms were clean, and the rest of the place was spotless.

The staff were attentive to our needs and knowing we were vegan before we came to stay, they brought a jug of plant-based milk to our room on arrival so we could make a coffee.

In the morning we had breakfast as part of our room rate and they had already placed a jug of vegan-friendly milk on the table, vegan butter and they’d even specially got some vegan yoghurts for the children (which they were very excited about!).

The cooked vegan breakfast was delicious and I could have eaten it twice over! There was also a selection of cereals and cute jars filled with fresh fruit and berries.

The verdict

The Greyhound Inn at Wilton offers a unique blend of historic charm and warm hospitality.

Plant-based eaters are spoilt for choice with their delicious vegan fare.

The accommodation was warm and cosy and the staff went the extra mile to ensure we had everything we needed with dairy-free delights (we did let them know in advance, so perhaps make them aware of any dietary requirements before you stay).

Whether you’re a seasoned traveller seeking a characterful escape, in the vicinity visiting the famous Stonehenge or a vegan foodie on the lookout for culinary adventures, this hidden gem promises a memorable experience.

  1. Wow, this Greyhound Inn sounds amazing! The vegan menu looks incredible, especially the roast dinner and puddings. I wouldn’t have expected such delicious options in a traditional pub. And the accommodation seems perfect for a family trip, with all the space and amenities. Definitely adding this to my list for future UK travel!
