Kolymbia isn’t a place you come to tick things off a list. It’s a place you stay when you want warm air, space to breathe, and days that unfold slowly without feeling like you need to spend lots of money to enjoy yourself.
During our two times staying here, especially when travelling as a family, we realised that some of the best moments in Kolymbia cost absolutely nothing. Walking, swimming, watching light change, and simply noticing what’s around you become the highlights.
If you’re visiting Rhodes outside peak summer, particularly after reading about why Rhodes works so well in October, Kolymbia really comes into its own. Here are the best free things to do in Kolymbia, based on how we spent our days.
Spend Time on Kolymbia Beach
Kolymbia has long, open stretches of beach where you don’t need to hire sunbeds to enjoy the sea. You can lay down a towel, find your own space, and stay as long as you like without feeling moved on.
Early mornings are quiet and calm. Late afternoons feel warm and golden with the sun making the clouds glow orange in the sky. Both are perfect for slow swims and floating without a plan.
You can read more about the feel of the beaches in our guide to Kolymbia Beach and White Rock Beach.

Swim in the Sea
Swimming in Kolymbia isn’t something you do once and move on from. The sea invites you back again and again.
The mix of sand and pebbles keeps the water beautifully clear, which makes swimming here enjoyable. We loved swimming in the sea here.

Morning swims feel calm and energising. Afternoon swims are warm and playful. Evening dips are quiet and reflective. Even in October, the water stays inviting, which aligns perfectly with what we noticed about the Rhodes weather in October.

Walk Down to Kolymbia Harbour
One of the simplest pleasures in Kolymbia is the walk to the harbour. It’s easy, and peaceful, especially if you head out early or just before sunset.
The harbour itself is small and relaxed. Boats come and go, the water stays clear, and it feels removed from the busier main road. Sitting here, watching the sea change colour, is one of those moments that doesn’t need anything added to it.

If you time it right, this walk naturally blends into the sunset walk to Kolymbia Flag Hill via the harbour, where you can see views across both beaches in Kolymbia and enjoy a nature walk which is the next free activity you can do in Kolymbia…

Watch the Sunset from Theotokos Hill (Flag Hill)
For one of the best free viewpoints in Kolymbia, head up Theotokos Hill, often called Flag Hill as there’s a Greek flag flapping about in the wind.
The walk isn’t long, but it opens up into wide views across Kolymbia, the coastline, and the sea, on both sides of the hill. As the sun lowers, the light softens and everything slows down. It’s quiet up there. No ticket barriers. No queues. Just sky, sea, and space.

Climb Tsambika Mountain
If you’re looking for a free activity that feels memorable and rewarding, climbing Tsambika Mountain is hard to beat.

The path is steep, and it takes effort, but the views unfold quickly. From the top, you can see across Tsambika Beach, the coastline, and back towards Kolymbia. It feels expansive and grounding at the same time.
We shared the full route and what to expect in our detailed guide to the Tsambika Mountain hike near Kolymbia, but even without preparation, this climb is doable for most people who take their time.

Walk to Tsambika Monastery and the Viewpoint
You don’t have to climb the full mountain to enjoy the views. Visiting the Tsambika Monastery area and nearby viewpoints is a gentler, and still free, alternative.
From here, you get sweeping views across Tsambika Beach and the sea beyond. It’s quieter than the beach below and feels reflective rather than busy.
It’s an easy stop to combine with a swim at White Rock Beach or Tsambika Beach, or a coastal drive. If you’re staying in Kolymbia, then it’s somewhere to walk to without leaving Kolymbia.

Explore Seven Springs (Epta Piges)
Seven Springs is a short drive from Kolymbia and makes a refreshing change from the coast.
Shaded paths, woodland, waterfalls, flowing water, and cooler air give this area a very different feel from the beaches. Walking through the tunnel and around the springs feels peaceful, especially on warmer days.
We enjoyed it enough to write a full guide to Seven Springs at Epta Piges, and it remains one of the best free nature spots close to Kolymbia.

Wildlife Spotting Around Kolymbia
One of the most unexpected free pleasures in Kolymbia is wildlife spotting.
We regularly saw lizards darting across paths, mountain goats high on the hills, peacocks wandering near accommodation, and insects like locusts and praying mantis in gardens and green areas.
When we stayed at Zen Club Luxury Villas in Kolymbia, it often felt quietly wild, with much wildlife visiting our villa’s garden.
And if you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins offshore, especially on calm days. We saw what was either a dolphin or a porpoise leaping across the sea when we stayed at the Atlantica Aegean Blue Hotel in Kolymbia.

Kolymbia as a Base for Exploring Rhodes
Kolymbia doesn’t shout for attention. It doesn’t overwhelm you with attractions. Instead, it quietly offers space, sea, and time.
Kolymbia works well as a place to stay in Rhodes because it sits between places, but isn’t as hectic and busy as some of the other resorts. You can explore without feeling rushed.
From here, with car hire, it’s easy to head towards Lindos for gentle wandering through whitewashed streets, something we loved when wandering the streets of Lindos. You can swim at St Paul’s Bay, look up at the Lindos Acropolis, or enjoy a relaxed vegan meal like the one we had at T-Veg in Lindos.
Even places like Rhodes Old Town aren’t too far away, and can be enjoyed cheaply if you focus on wandering rather than paid attractions.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a packed itinerary to enjoy Kolymbia. Some of the best moments come from swimming in the sea, walking to the harbour, climbing a mountain, or watching the sun set from a quiet hill.
And if you’re still deciding where Kolymbia fits into a wider trip, browsing my full Rhodes travel archive or wider Greece section can help place it in context, alongside reflections like our 15 surprising things we learned about Rhodes.
Sometimes the best parts of travel aren’t the things you pay for. They’re the moments you didn’t plan, and Kolymbia is very good at giving you those, as there is so much to explore for free on foot from mountains, to monasteries, to harbours and hills with sunset views.
