On our recent trip to Cornwall we managed a quick stop at Porthluney Beach. See our photos and videos at the end of this blog post of Porthluney Beach.
Porthluney Beach
The day we went to Porthluney Beach was very wet and windy. Typically we had a storm that lasted two and a half days during our Cornwall holiday with high winds and heavy rain. It was non stop for nearly half our holiday!
We managed around 30 minutes on Porthluney Beach before we were all absolutely drenched, even with waterproofs and wellies!
The river was gushing so fast over the beach and I couldn’t cross in many places as my wellies have split whilst on this holiday and so they’re no longer waterproof. Very disappointing as I only purchased these Regatta wellies in the spring after my previous pair of Rockfish wellies split after lasting 6 years! This pair have barely lasted 6 months.
I need to get some new wellies without a hole and I keep thinking it would also be great to get some sort of all-in-one waterproof adult suit! That with some wellies and a large goggles and we’ll be sorted for the beach, even with the heavy rain pelting us in the face!
Behind Porthluney Beach is Caerhays Castle and Gardens which is now closed for the season until February, but looks a beautiful place to visit. The gates are just behind the beach and we could see the picturesque castle when driving in.
I’m not sure what the beach is usually like, but in the storm and with the river rapidly flowing, most of the beach had running water or pockets of water on it. Otherwise it seemed sandy and a relatively small beach to explore, but with lovely large cliffs to either side making it a beautiful natural setting.
Even though the weather was awful I am glad we got to see this beach. Even Ben who has been to this part of Cornwall numerous time was surprised he had never been to this beach or castle.
Bless Bella who was very optimistic bringing her fishing net! And Reuben who was so cold, even in all his layers, that he had little scrunched up fists the whole time!
We soon had to admit defeat by the weather and return sodden through to our Bongo. I’m glad we brought the Bongo as we nearly drove my car to Cornwall instead which would have been a squeeze with all these extra wet weather clothes and boots.
The Bongo has given us a large boot that we can all sit in when it’s raining to see the views, eat and drink. It’s also great for changing the kids in and out of their rain suits, and once out of their wet clothes they simply climb over to their car seats to not have to get wet in the rain again!

It looks like a lovely place. I think it’s a great idea to take a vehicle like the Bongo, to use as a shelter from which to enjoy the outdoors while staying a bit warmer and drier. I’d never have thought of that!
We didn’t realise how useful it would be when we bought it. It serves so many purposes from a multiperson vehicle, to being able to move furniture, camping and even as a spacious place to be (kind of like a room) when the weather is terrible on days out!!
