Talk to the experts

There are many floating markets in and around Bangkok, where there is an extensive network of canals that run through the city, and if you would like to visit floating markets that are not on the tourist trail, a tour operator is the best option, plus they can handle all the travel arrangements and even give you a local English-speaking guide to look after you for the duration of the trip. You may already be aware that English is not widely spoken, especially in non-tourist areas, so getting around could be a problem, and getting lost is a real possibility. Rather than spend an exhausting day trying to locate a floating market, let an experienced tour operator take the strain, which leaves you to enjoy the experience.

Sun protection

You should wear a hat to protect your head from the sun, plus put on some sunscreen prior to departing your hotel, which will protect you against sunburn. It only takes a couple of hours in the sun to get sunburn, so you are strongly advised to protect yourself.

Stay hydrated

Always carry a bottle of water when out and about, as dehydration will certainly ruin your holiday, and you should drink at least 6 glasses of water per day, regardless of where you are in Thailand. While at the floating market, you will be able to buy delicious local drinks, with fresh fruit smoothies and iced tea or coffee, and it does get very hot during the day.

Take a secure bag for your belongings

Make sure you have adequate storage space for your digital camera, as there will be no end of photo opportunities at these colourful places. Keep your valuables in a safe place, and your balancing skills are likely to be tested as you navigate the many longboats, which is all part of the fun!
